Progressive Retinal Atrophy
Also known as Progressive Retinal Degeneration, this hereditary disease
process literally involves the slow death of the retina, the membrane in the back of the
eyeball where light is focused; and will result in blindness. Dogs of
any age can be affected; although it most commonly affects older
dogs. A simple eye exam conducted by a certified veterinary ophthalmologist
can determine whether PRA or any other eye disease is present. Because many eye diseases do not appear until later in life, the eye exam
should be repeated yearly, beginning around age 1.
